WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT

Mark DeWet Safaris, together with our various associates, partners and concession holders with whom we operate, are responsible for the sustainable utilisation of wildlife and the take-off of trophy animals within the areas that we hunt.

We have an obligation to hunt only mature trophies on our various concessions and properties, thus ensuring that proper wildlife management and selective hunting can maintain future trophy quality. Therefore if we all hunt wisely, then good trophies are taken on a more regular basis, and also improved upon. This responsibility also extends to you.... the Hunter!

QUOTAS

Quotas of species and numbers are determined annually, so please be aware that trophy animals are subject to quota availability. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to hunt all your species within our various hunting concessions and properties during the course of your safari. Therefore we recommend that you plan and book your safari well in advance to ensure that we are able to allocate your desired species.

CONCESSIONS

Concessions are generally in remote and wilderness areas and are normally under the control of the local community, Games Department and Government of the country where the hunt takes place. Most Big Game concessions or hunting blocks are far from any form of civilisation or human encroachment. These areas are unfenced and the wildlife free to roam at will. It is in these areas that the true spirit of sport hunting is practiced.

Hunting is on foot by tracking and stalking and it is therefore advisable that the hunter be in reasonable physical condition in order to partake in such a hunt, and to truly enjoy this unique African experience.

CAMPS AND LODGES

Conditions can vary according to the country or area you are planning to hunt. Accommodation can be anything from permanent lodges with all the modern facilities to traditional tented camps, reed and thatch chalets to cozy timber bungalows. All accommodations have private showers with hot and cold running water and flush toilets. Comfortable beds with linen, duvets, mosquito nets and insect proofing are the norm in the majority of our camps and lodges. Lighting is supplied either by electricity, generators or solar power. Fridges and freezers are standard equipment in all camps.

All meals are wholesome, tasty and well prepared and game meat (venison) is served on a regular basis, together with fresh vegetables, salads, fruit, freshly baked bread and bottled water. Local alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wines, spirits and soft drinks are supplied and available in camp for moderate consumption and are included in you safari costs - unless otherwise specified.

RECOMMENDED CALIBRES

Terrain, habitat and species usually determine the calibre of choice for the animal that will be hunted. African game by nature, are a lot tougher than species found elsewhere in the world. therefore it is important that the correct calibre and bullet be selected by the hunter to ensure maximum penetration and a humane kill of the trophy.

For open plains type hunting, we recommend calibres ranging from 7mm to the 300 H & H Magnums. These calibres are suitable for taking down small to medium and large size antelope, especially when it comes to long distance shooting over 250 yards. If hunting in thick brush or riverine type thickets, where shooting distances are normally under 200 yards, then any of the 300 and above calibres are ideal. Heavier grained bullets are suitable for this type of hunting.

By law, all dangerous game must be hunted with a minimum calibre of .375 H & H. Wildcat calibres usually fail more than succeed on the African Continent - therefore we highly recommend that hunters stick to the tried and tested calibres that have proven successful over time.

REMEMBER - CORRECT SHOT PLACEMENT USUALLY RESULTS IN THE ANIMAL "BEING IN THE SALT"

IMPORTATION OF FIREARMS

There are different laws governing the temporary import of firearms into Africa. Requirements vary from country to country, therefore it is important that the international hunter be aware of what paperwork is needed to bring their weapons into the country that they are intending to hunt in. Please check with us what the procedures are, so that we can assist you with your applications.

Most African countries now insist that hunters have documentation and licenses issued in their country of origin stating that they are the legal owner of the weapons that they will be bringing with them on safari. A copy of this license/document must be shown or submitted with your temporary import application.

LICENSES AND PERMITS

Licensing and permit systems vary depending what country and area you plan to hunt. In some areas, license fees are included in your trophy costs, while other areas require the hunter to purchase the licenses for the game they will be hunting prior to the commencement of the safari. In this case, license fees are charged separately from trophy fees. Certain species require CITES import/export permits. Once again, please check with us what the requirements are for the areas and countries you intend to hunt in.

TRAVEL AND MEDICAL INFORMATION

Ensure that your passport is valid and that all travel documents are in order for the duration of you safari. Certain countries require entry visas as well as specific inoculations prior to entry. Should you need further information in this regard, please contact us or check with your travel agent or physician what procedures are required by the country and/or area you will be traveling to.

All our camps/lodges and vehicles are equipped with basic first aid and medical kits. We also have excellent medical services which are available in towns close to SOME of our hunting areas.

Malaria can still be a problem in Africa, so it is highly recommended that prophylactics are taken before, during and after your trip. Please check with your GP before leaving your country of origin.

PLEASE ADVISE US OF ANY IMPORTANT MEDICAL CONDITIONS - SUCH AS DIABETES, CORONARY PROBLEMS OR ANY LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES - Ensure that you have sufficient supplies of any prescription medication.
